The Tooth And Nothing But The Tooth By Chris “Dr Smile Maker” Branfield
Hello again. Well, we are into March already! It’ll be Easter in no time.
I got out of my comfort zone last month and gave an hour-long presentation to a group of dental practices. All went well and the feedback was good so there is another box ticked.
There was also a fund-raiser evening for our Dental Mavericks charity.
There was a Las Vegas Theme. In fact it was called Viva Las Leeds and we were told to come as 50’s film stars.
I was really chuffed to be awarded fund-raiser of the year for the Mavericks.
We raised over £1400 on the night and this will fund a nurse to go over to Morocco to help on one of our projects.
Long In The Tooth. Isn’t That To Do With Horses?
I was asked to write a bit on dentistry for the aging person. Getting long in the tooth is phrase about getting old. I was interested to see its origin. Apparently, horses' gums recede as they get older. So you can tell a horse's age by how long their teeth appear to be; that is, how much of the tooth is exposed the tooth.
The phrase "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" has the same origin. If someone gives you a gift of a horse, it's impolite to check its age right off; if someone gives you something with no strings attached, don't check to see if it's good enough for you
The truth is that a lot of mammals get natural gum recession with age and humans are no different. This can be exaggerated and speeded up by gum disease. Some people are genetically more prone than others for all sorts of reasons.
So What Is The Relevance Then?
There is quite a bit. One thing is that with gum recession there can be more nooks and crannies to clean and this be a bit difficult. It can be even more difficult if you have arthritis or struggle with manual dexterity for any other reasons.
Here, electric toothbrushes can be a real help. They have thicker handles to grip and do quite a bit of the movement for you so it reduces some of the wrist movement that you would need with a manual toothbrush.
Dr “Smile Maker” Top Tip:
Anyone For Tennis?
If it becomes difficult to grip a toothbrush due to arthritis, stroke or any other reason then you may consider a tennis ball. WHAT? Have you gone mad?
No, if you cut a small cross into a tennis all and insert the handle of a toothbrush in it then this can make a real difference because it is easier to grip.
You can do the same sort of thing with some pipe lagging. Cut a small length and tape it onto the handles if you need to.
This could be put on an electric tooth brush as well if necessary.
Another great device is a waterflosser. There is a cordless one but this is a little bit trickier to use than the corded one. The” nano” model is the newest model and is smaller. It acts like a mini jet washer for around your teeth and gums.
I don’t think that Karcher do one yet. It is a good bit of kit and we have seen some fantastic results.
City Riding High
Hull city are back up to 2nd in the championship as I write. Come on lads keep pushing to the end and you can get promotion. I think that it will be a really exciting finish.
Until next time. Take care and be good.

The Tooth And Nothing But The Tooth By Chris “Dr Smile Maker” Branfield

Third Time Lucky In Morocco?
Happy New Year!! I hope that you are well.
I do hope that you had a great Christmas and are now energised and ready for the year ahead. Dental Mavericks are already starting to plan the fourth trip to Morocco. I gave a presentation to the South Cave and Wolds Rotary group at the Half moon Pub in Elloughton as part of my fundraising. Thanks to the group for making me feel really welcome and for the great feedback.
New Challenges In Morocco
On the last trip to El Jebah, Morocco we had some new bits of kit. Dentaid had done some prototype equipment for us. This included a light that attached to the fold down chair and a suction unit. We also had a portable electric motor and handpieces so that we could do some simple fillings and sealants to protect teeth. This was an adventure in itself!!
Back In El Jebah,I did send out some compressed air canisters and some 50mm syringes to draw up water and use to during the fillings and sealants but these got stopped at Heathrow and we didn’t get them in the end. How frustrating. So we had a good root about in the clinic and managed to find some smaller ones for the water. Make do and mend approach. Not ideal but what can you do?
Now That Got The Heart Racing!
Oh my word, the new motor. At work my handpiece thingy works via a foot pedal, which means that it when I lift my foot it stops. In Morocco, we have a portable electric motor with a knob on it that to you turn to start it and then stop it. The thing is the motor clips onto a belt or goes in your pocket. This means that it is on when you start and won’t stop for anything until to take it out of the mouth and turn the knob.
I tell you what you need to be extra vigilant using one of these babies. It all turned out fine in the end. The kids, on the whole were great. As clinical director I felt that it was my duty to have first go with the new stuff so that I could report back to the group.
Oh, the suction units lasted all of about 30 seconds each. Mmm.
Down From The Mountains
One mother, whose child was not at the school, brought her little boy down to see us. My colleagues had to take a few teeth out to alleviate his pain. The next day his mother returned with some photographs of him, some of when he was a baby. These are irreplaceable. It just shows the emotional contact that is made and the gratitude shown. Marvellous stuff.
My Practice Manager Gillian, It Was An Eye Opener For Her
All the children were given gifts and toothpaste
The Biggest Challenge Though
On this last trip we got 156 kids out of daily dental pain and saw 22 kids for fillings/ preventive sealants (multiple on each one). We have a fantastic team.
Now this is great and we feel that we are doing a good job at this. BUT. We really want things to get better and for the “Teeth For Life Programme” to kick in.
We have been through education and leave toothpaste and brushes but this really needs to be something done on a daily basis or at least a couple of times a week in the school. At the moment they are happy for us to go out and take teeth out once a year. That is not really what we are about long term. We really need buy in to the prevention that we can support them with. I really do hope that the penny drops. It should do, eventually.
Riding High
As I write Hull City are just 3 points off the top of the table and been playing some great football. Keep it up lads you can do it. My daughter is still playing and their team is in second position. Come on Whitestar Falcons.
Until next time. Take care and be good.

The Tooth And Nothing But The Tooth By Hull Dentist Chris “Dr Smile Maker” Branfield
Third Time Lucky in Morocco?
Hello, I hope that you are well. Wow, December again. That was quick! I don’t suppose that it will slow down a bit.
20 Years And Still Going Strong
Just last week I went to Leeds to take a trip down memory lane. Leeds Dental Alumni had a reunion.
There was a study day first with a dinner to follow in the evening. There were quite a few out of my year because we are the class of 1992 so it was a 20 years reunion. I tell you what, it was fantastic. Sitting back in the lecture theatre surrounded by people that I was sitting with 20 years ago was really good fun. It felt like only yesterday that we were there. The banter was immediate.
Aiming For The Stars In A Virtual World
Leeds is a great University and they have a very high ambition to be in the top 5 Universities in the world. The Oral Biology department lead the world in some areas of dental research. Very impressive! They have a taken a discovery to be licenced as a commercial product that will help grow and heal bone. The dental school is one of only 2 places in the world to have MOOG virtual dental devices. This was weird stuff, to me anyway. I must be getting old. A Dentist learning to sort out teeth in a similar way to a pilot learning on a flight simulator.
Overcoming Challenges In Morocco
At the end of September I went to Morocco again with the Dental Mavericks Charity. This was the biggest group that we have taken. There were 7 dentists and a dental therapist among the group. Gillian Fisher, my practice manager, had her first adventure with the Mavericks this year as well. It was an eye opener for her I can tell you!
This year was a bit more challenging from the off. We had gained our licence from the Minister for Health just a week or two before we got there. This took a couple of phone calls every week for almost a year. When we got to customs at Tangier we had our trailer impounded for 2 and a half days. We had the documentation but no “rubber stamp”! I don’t think that it mattered what rubber stamp to be
honest. I think that we will put our own on next time. One day Cally (who is the pulse of Dental Mavericks) and Domien, our guide and “Mr Fix It”, had to go to 12 different offices with no luck. The left hand didn’t know what the right hand was doing. Is that a saying? Answers on a post card.
Reunited At Last
After a 5 hour round trip on day 3 and a visit to the King’s Palace in Chef Chaouen we finally had permission to have the trailer with all our kit and equipment. We still didn’t have a physical rubber stamp. We were just glad to get on and not waste any more time. Time to get some of these kids out of pain.
There are still some more challenges to overcome in El Jebah.
Look, I hope that you all have a fantastic Christmas and a wonderful New Year!!
Until next time. Take care and be good.

Hull Dentist Chris Branfield 'The Beatles and Mouth Cancer'
“The Tooth And Nothing But The Tooth”
By Hull Dentist Chris “Dr Smile Maker” Branfield
The Beatles And Mouth Cancer. What?
Hello, I hope that you are well and enjoying the autumnal colours.
I hope that you didn’t have a dental casualty from Hull Fair. I’ve seen a few in my time. I didn’t make it this year. The kids don’t want to go round with parents anymore. Oh hum.
50 Years Of The Beatles And Mouth Cancer
Celebrations are going on all over the place because it is 50 years of the Beatles. We have embraced this to have a bit of fun this week have also linked it with a more serious subject of mouth cancer awareness. I suppose it is like yin and yang, serious with fun. Tomorrow (as I write) we will have a morning of free mouth cancer screening. November is Mouth Cancer Awareness Month.
The Wig Covered Up My Thin Bit
So What Are The Cold Facts?
Over 6000 people will be diagnosed with mouth cancer this year alone in the UK and half will die without early diagnosis. It is on the increase. It is related to age, smoking, drinking alcohol, poor diet, human papilloma virus, smokeless tabacco. Smokeless tobacco is normally defined as any tobaccoproduct that is placed in the mouth or nose and not burned. Although some people believe this type of tobacco is safer than smoking, the reality is that it is much more dangerous. The types of smokeless tobacco products most used in the UK often contain a mix of ingredients including slaked lime, areca nut and spices flavourings and sweeteners. Smokeless tobacco is used particularly by South Asian Communities, especially women. The incidence of mouth cancer is significantly greater among South Asian women.
How Do We Detect Early?
Regular screening is important. At our place have a good look under magnification and white light at every examination. We have now invested in the new cordless VELscope Vx which is another layer of screening that shows up suspicious areas due to the way the tissues fluoresce under the specific blue light.
I think that thorough examination is so important if we are to make strides turn the tide and stop the increase in mouth cancer. This, along with education, of course.
The John Lennon Tooth DNA Necklace Arrived To Start It’s UK Tour
There is actually a bit of John Lennon’s tooth inside. A bit weird I know, but a little different. We are the first dental practice on the Tour of the country.
Hull City Are Back To Winning Ways and a very exciting game against Ipswich. You could feel the buzz, it was great to get the winner right at the end, edge of the seat stuff. My daughter’s team are still unbeaten in the league this season, fingers crossed for the rest.
Until next time. Take care and be good.

John Lennon's Tooth Helps Promote Oral Cancer
John Lennon’s Tooth helps promote Oral Cancer.
As part of a celebration of the ‘The Beatles Mania Week Celebrating 50 Years, Marketing Pirates of Dentistry have organised that 16 dental practices throughout the UK have ‘on loan’ part of John Lennon’s Tooth for a nationwide promotion of Oral Cancer.
John Lennon's tooth recently fetched £19,000 at auction and it was bought by Michael Zuk, author and dentist and obsessive collector of celebrity teeth.
The tooth had been in the family of Lennon's former housekeeper Dot Jarlett. Lennon gave it to her to dispose of sometime between 1964 and 1968, but then suggested she keep the tooth to give to her daughter who was a big Beatles fan, citing it may be worth something one day. She recently had to sell the tooth to pay for a family member’s operation.
Omega Auction House, which listed the item, told CNN that because it was coming from Jarlett, they don't doubt the tooth's authenticity. Part of the tooth has since been turned into a DNA necklace made by famous Beverley Hills jewellery designer Ari Soffer and it has been valued at $25,000.
Over the next few weeks the Tooth necklace is being passed around 16 dental practices to highlight National Mouth Cancer Month which will include free mouth screenings, promotions and fundraising events at each of the dental practices.
In 2010 a total of 1,985 deaths occurred from oral (mouth) cancer in the UK. And the real benefit from the ‘Beatles Mania Week’ is to make UK residents aware of the dangers they may face. The largest increases have been in people aged 50- 69 years.
Hull Dentist, Dr Chris Branfield (co-founder and trustee of the charity Dental Mavericks) was the first to borrow the ‘John Lennon DNA Tooth Necklace’ to highlight Mouth Cancer and used his promotional day to do free 10 minutes screenings and also teamed up with Lloyds the Chemist to offer free diabetes and blood pressure screenings. He is also raising money to buy a Dental Ambulance to deliver dentistry to the Hull homeless.
Chris said, “The ‘Beatles Mania Week Celebrating 50 Year’s was to offer Hull people a chance to diagnose mouth cancer before it’s too late. People even got to wear John Lennon’s tooth around their neck and have a picture taken too.”
Michael Zuk, the ‘obsessed’ dentist that bought John Lennon’s tooth, (who incidentally also purchased one of Elvis Presley's crowns) said: “To celebrate the life of one of Rock & Roll’s greatest artists, I am pleased to announce we have teamed up on a unique DNA jewellery project with Los Angeles celebrity jewellery designer Ari Soffer who has made pieces for stars such as Tommy Lee, Axl Rose and Slash. I recently discovered Ari’s work after my wife mentioned she'd kill for a diamond encrusted pendant that a Beverly Hills Housewife star was wearing.”

Bracknell Dentist Teresa Day Advocate for Screening for Mouth Cancer
1,985 deaths in the UK in 2010 Caused By Oral Cancer
Bracknell Dentist Dr Teresa Day, Clinical Director at Appledore is a strict advocate of checking for mouth cancer – she ensures every patient is checked for mouth cancer - this disfiguring disease can affect your lips, tongue, cheeks and throat. Appledore clinicians use the Velscope Cancer Screening System - the earlier this disease is caught the more positive the treatment outcome will be.
Appledore was one of the first clinics in the UK to have the Velscope, not all dentists offer this service !
Who is at risk?
Mouth cancer has always been strongly related to age, in the UK 44% of all mouth cancer cases were diagnosed in people aged 65 and over, with more than 25% diagnosed in the under 55s. This gap has diminished over time but men are still twice as likely to develop mouth cancer than women.
Your risk of mouth cancer peaks at ages 60-69 in men and over 80s in women
What are the risk factors?
- Smoking helps to transforms saliva into a deadly cocktail that damages cells in the mouth and can turn them cancerous.
- Around 1/5 of the UK’s population smoke and this is still considered the leading cause of mouth cancer.
- According to the WHO up to half of current smokers will eventually die of a tobacco related disease, including mouth cancer.
- Drinking to excess can increase mouth cancer risks by four times.
People who smoke and drink to excess are up to 30 times more likely to develop mouth cancer as alcohol aids the absorption of tobacco into the mouth.
Smokeless tobacco is usually defined as any tobacco product that is placed in the mouth or nose and not burned. Some people believe this type of tobacco is safer than smoking, in fact it is much more dangerous. The products mostly used in the UK often contain a mix of ingredients including slaked lime, areca nut and spices, flavourings and sweeteners.
The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), transmitted via oral sex, is increasingly being linked to mouth cancer. People with multiple sexual partners are more at risk.
The lifetime risk of developing oral cancer in the UK is estimated to be 1 in 93 for men and 1 in 186 for women
